Below is a list of commonly asked questions. Please read them and see if your question has been answered:
Q: How old do I have to be to join? A: You can join as early as 14! We have a Firematics program in part with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA Post #441), where you can learn all the different aspects of the fire service. To become an active member, you must be at least 18 years of age.
Q: What kinds of opportunities are there with a volunteer fire dept? A: There are many opportunities, in fact, they're endless! We don't have seperate divisions or 'companies' within our department, so whatever skill you posses, we can use! We are not a 'one size fits all' department, but every member should be as well versed as possible. If you don't think you have anything to offer, think again!
Q: What if I have a criminal background? A: Be up front and honest about any criminal history. We run background checks on all applicants, and will determine your eligibility on a case by case basis.
Q: What do I need to send in with my application? A: You will need to send in a check made payable to the Baden Volunteer Fire Department in the amount of $10 that will be deposited upon acceptance. This covers your application fee and annual dues.
Q: What if I don't like ladders? A: Ladders aren't for everyone, and you won't have to do something you are not comfortable doing.
Q: What is expected of me as a volunteer? A: You will be expected to attend all meetings and trainings as set by the department. We have 1 meeting per month, and 2 department trainings, along with 1 probationary training night per month. It is recommended you do not miss more than 2 meetings in a 12 month period as a probationary member. You will also be expected to volunteer your time and services to the department as needed, and also to take part in fundraising events. We are not here to take control of your life, but you must make an effort to be a part of the team.
Q: Do I have to pay for anything out of pocket? A: No, all standard gear is provided to you by the department at no cost. You will be responsible for the care of these items. If you wish to purchase any extra gear (ie: helmet cams), you may do so at your expense. Any trainings that the department attends or approves will be paid for by the department.
Q: When can I run blue lights? A: Blue lights can be used on personal vehicles only after being promoted from a probationary member to an active member. Blue lights are not mandatory, and are not a right. When you are able to run blue lights, you are only permitted to have them on when responding to a call. Also, traffic is not obligated to get out of your way. Be respectful to other motorists and obey all traffic laws.
Q: Will I get compensated for my time as a volunteer? A: Yes, you will be paid $2.30/hr for all calls and approved trainings as the budget allows.
Q: How can I apply? A: Download and print out the application, and send it in to be reviewed! For a brief summary of the application process, click here!
