In March of 2010, several of the Region 13 Task Force leaders attended a Special Operations Symposium at the FDNY Training Academy on Randall's Island, NY (aka 'The Rock'). Among the 300+ attendees from areas ranging from Panama to Germany, were 3 Line Officers from the Baden Volunteer Fire Department. Chief David Trzcianka, Asst Chief Patrick McFarland, and Lt Matthew Loftus, were priviledged to attend this symposium to gain an in depth knowledge base from the most experienced and recognized chief officers of the FDNY.
The 2 day lecture focused on logistics, SOG's, tactics, and safety issues involved during special operations. The Symposium included topics such as Hazmat, Structural and Trench Collapse, Marine Operations, EMS Operations, and Firefighter Safety and Survival, as well as 'Commanding in Time', which was in reference to the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. This opportunity has trained multiple region team leaders to efficiently and safely command local technical rescue teams at large scale incidents.
