As the winter months approach rapidly, many residents are beginning to utilize furnaces and/or fireplaces to heat their homes. In most cases these units have not operated for nearly 9 months. Any fireplace that is not adequately combusting materials and or vented properly can cause a build up of carbon monoxide (an extremely dangerous by-product of burning) within a residence. A furnace that is not running properly can also produce carbon monoxide and build up of such in a home can be deadly.
The Baden Fire Department recommends that you have your fireplace and/or furnace serviced annually to assure proper functioning and reduce the possibility of accumulating carbon monoxide into your living space.
This time of year is also important to either install carbon monoxide detectors and for the ones already in place to assure good batteries have been installed for proper operation. Most CO detectors have a life span of only 2 years, although technology has progressed, and some distributors advertise 7 years.
Smoke detectors are only rated for a 10 year life span. Any detector beyond 10 years should also be replaced. For any event of uncertainty or the suspected build up of harmful fumes, please contact your local emergency services by dialing 9-1-1 to ensure a safe environment.
Remember: When the clocks change, our detector batteries change as well. Dead batteries could lead to death.
HAVE A SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON.
